Maximising Mentorship for Career Success with Ok Mentor

There’s no denying it, the job market is a hot mess right now.

  • The gender pay gap is 14.3%.

  • Working-class creatives (musicians, artists and writers) has shrunk by have since the 1970s.

  • Job vacancies in the UK are at a three year low.

  • The number of Black and minority ethnic workers in low-paid and insecure jobs doubled in past decade.

OK Mentor has entered the chat and we are here to help!

While we can’t solve everything, we do offer a free tailored mentorship which could help you with:

  • How to negotiate a raise

  • Managing imposter syndrome

  • Making your ideas heard

  • Switching careers

  • Going freelance

  • Networking

  • And much more!

Last month, we launched our 2024 cohort of mentees at our Mentoring Matters event, where we broke it down.

The event was open to anyone looking to kickstart their mentoring journey and we covered everything from how to use our platform to getting the most out of mentoring.

We had a guest panel featuring Mercy Abel, Lauren Spearman, Gabi Villa, Holly Smith, Jo Lyall and Boglarka Nemeth plus we had a full house of people just like you, you want to take charge of their careers!

If you didn't get a chance to make it, don't worry - we have all the key info for you!

Our platform…

At Ok Mentor we are on a mission to bring quality mentorship to women earlier and at their convenience.

Signing up is quick and easy, with matching facilitated by our smart algorithm. The fitness of our matches is, on average, 95.7%.

How the programme works…

  • We run 2 crash mentoring programmes per year, usually in March and September. Registrations open two months ahead of time.

  • The general commitment is that you meet with your match for 1 hour once a month, for 3 months.

  • However it’s up to you and your match what this looks like in practice - virtual, in person, more than three times, or less - the programme is flexible to suit your needs.

How do mentors and mentees get paired up?

Ok Mentor uses IntrosAI, an AI-driven algorithm which matches mentors and mentees based on a set of questions.

It's important to note that mentors and mentees are not matched based solely on the industry they come from, rather a combination of experiences (e.g. if a mentee in social media wants to tackle negotiating salaries, they might get paired with a mentor with experience in that but who works in graphic design), softer skills and passions.

Goal setting provides a solid foundation…

When you define your objectives, you can chart a course towards your desired career outcomes. This could look different for different people so not everyone has the same goal.

Ok Mentor provides the framework for you to create your personal roadmap to whatever success looks like for you–including looking at areas such as:

  • Personal growth - You want to define and grow your capabilities and understanding and create opportunities for yourself.

  • Grow your personal brand - You know the value of determining and building your personal brand within a professional setting and beyond and want to learn more about how.

  • Insights and understanding - You want to broaden your skills and knowledge of the industry as well as gain insights into the personal attributes and softer metrics for success.

  • Building a network - You understand the value of a wide and strong network and how this can help you to identify and grab opportunities.

Once you’ve set your goals, keep track of your progress and feed everything back to your mentor–it will help you to stay accountable and make it easier for your mentor to share relevant advice.

Proactivity is the sauce of life - and mentorship…

Once matched with your mentor, it's important that you take proactive steps to ensure things run smoothly.

What does that look like?

  • Reaching out soon after being matched. Everyone’s time is precious, regardless of their level or role, so keep that in mind when scheduling/minimising your number of rescheduled meets.

  • Establishing communication preferences (eg: times, methods of communication etc).

  • Setting clear meeting agendas (eg: in this meeting, I want to discuss how to go about entering this field so what steps have I taken, and where can I go from here).

  • Ask for specific feedback. We know it's scary but this is how you garner actionable insights and grow as a result.

Mentoring can unlock new opportunities…

According to a Jobvite survey, a referred candidate is hired at a rate of 30% - compared to an average rate of 7% who applied through other methods.

Additionally, those who are hired through referrals are 40% more likely to be retained after one year than non-referral hires.

Having a mentor provides a pathway into unlocking new career opportunities, without the added stress of attending events (we know they can be daunting!), and make meaningful connections along the way.

If events are your bag, and you’d like to gain a ton of fresh perspectives outside of your personal mentor, Ok Mentor offers speed mentoring events across the year, where you can access a plethora of incredible women from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

And we’re not all talk…

Júlia Fuscaldi Rebouças - Mentor

  • “It was a really easy way to mentor via Ok Mentor platform vs. finding people outside. I joined pre-launch and got matched with a mentee who needed support with building her portfolio. We scheduled all 3 sessions on the platform which was very convenient. I really enjoyed the whole experience. It was good to see mentee's confidence growing and her self-esteem getting bigger.

Rebecca Betteridge - Mentee

  • “The main thing that stood out for me about Ok Mentor is the ethos of women helping other women. I really loved the premise of learning from such inspirational women from across so many different industries. The calibre of Founders, CEOs and other mentees that we have on the platform really inspired me to join in and I was keen to soak up as much information as I could from such an impressive group of women.”

Emily Taylor - Mentor

  • “It’s a quick way to build deeper connections and network with the next generation of women leaders. Ok Mentor offers an avenue to practice social impact in your day to day, directly support women and inspire confidence as they navigate challenges that regularly crop up in the corporate landscape. And, third, it looks good on your resume!”

Being a mentor or mentee aren't the only ways you can get involved in Ok Mentor…
